Lee Trevino calls Masters participants 'gutless' for acquiescing to hierarchy

By John Strege Stories of interest you might have missed…Lee Trevino has never been a fan of the dictatorial nature of the Masters’ hierarchy. “There were just too many rules for me,” Trevino said in this story by Phil Stukenborg of The Commercial Appeal. “If you go there now and try to use a cellphone they will kick you out, even if you are using it in the parking lot or on the driving range. The players can’t even use them on the driving range. Have you heard one of them complain yet? No,

Ian Poulter takes to Twitter to get a fan in trouble with employer. Again

By Joel Beall Earlier this year we relayed a peculiar tale involving Ian Poulter and a fan. At the Valspar Championship, a man named JJ Downum jeered Poulter, taking to Twitter to brag about psyching out the Ryder Cup star. Poulter took notice and informed Downum's employer, leading to his dismissal. It appears, following another bout of social media criticism, Poulter again has reached out to a company to complain about an employee's actions.Last week in a Hong Kong tournament, Poulter was

What the Hell Happened to David Duval?

By   Chip Brown  I. SLOWLY AND ALL AT ONCEThere aren't many people in his galleries anymore, and fewer still along the ropes who know what his game was like when he was splitting fairways, the cocky master of laser-guided irons and magic on the greens. That was a lifetime ago, he often says, as if the wised-up mortal man of 38 with five kids had nothing to do with that numbed prodigy of a dozen years ago whose obsession with controlling the flight of a golf ball – for all the joy it offered and

After split with Lydia Ko, David Leadbetter cautions her about meddlesome parents

By Jaime Diaz It’s hard to envision a more outwardly well-adjusted superstar golfer than Lydia Ko. On and off the course, she seems serene, confident, thoughtful and fun. It’s an impression the players she’s been beating like a drum unanimously confirm, and one which the 19-year-old’s own words and actions reinforce. Ko seems to possess the rare combination of talent and temperament that seems perfectly suited to a long reign at the top of the game. But, it appears, even Lydia Ko has

Derek Jeter is obsessed with golf, 'the most frustrating thing I've done'

By Brian Wacker NEW PROVIDENCE, Bahamas -- Derek Jeter owned one of the sweetest swings in baseball. When it comes to golf, the former Yankee and future Hall of Famer’s action isn’t quite as smooth, but the results are still pretty good. Since retiring two years ago, he has whittled his handicap to a very-respectable 10.“I’m obsessed,” Jeter said Wednesday from the Hero World Challenge, where earlier in the week he played a casual nine holes alongside Tiger Woods, Justin Rose and former teammate

Wait, someone paid WHAT for President Bush's golf equipment?

By Joel BeallTwo weeks ago, we let you know that a collection of golf equipment belonging to President George H.W. Bush -- including a golf bag, putter, shoes and golf balls -- was up for auction. The equipment was originally given by Bush to a worker at Cape Arundel Golf Club, a course in Kennebunkport, Maine where Bush was a member. Considering the lot featured just one actual club -- compared to, say, John F. Kennedy's complete set -- we didn't think this auction would garner much

Johnny Miller on slow play: “I should be Commissioner, that would help”

By Bob Carney Not everybody loves the truth,” Johnny Miller told a happy Chicago crowd Friday night. But he pretty much dished it out anyway. Miller was speaking to a Western Golf Association fundraiser for the Evans Scholars foundation, which awards 250 full-ride scholarships to caddies every year.“What can we do about slow play on the tour?” host Mark Rolfing asked the honored guest.“To start with I think I should be Commissioner. That would help,” said Miller with slight twinkle in his eye.

Matt Kuchar Makes Hole-In-One, Doesn't Win Car Because Of Ridiculous Rule

By Alex Myers Thankfully, a rich PGA Tour star not getting to keep a shiny new car is the height of a first-world problem. But what happened to Matt Kuchar at the WGC-HSBC Champions on Saturday still falls under the category of highway robbery.Kuchar made a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th in the third round, just a few feet away from a Cadillac that's on display as a prize for such a shot. So why is the car staying in Shanhai and not being shipped to Kuchar's driveway? Because of some fine

Why you won't be seeing the MetLife "Snoopy" blimps at PGA Tour events anymore

By:  Alex Myers If you've attended a PGA Tour event, odds are you've seen them. If you've watched one on TV, you've definitely noticed their handiwork. The MetLife blimps have become a staple of golf broadcasts, but you won't be seeing "Snoopy One" or "Snoopy Two" in 2017. Or ever again, for that matter. Why? Why it just got a little bit harder to make a cut on the PGA Tour

By Alex Myers A new rule this season will make it a little bit harder to make a cut on the PGA Tour. Emphasis on a little.  And it's actually not so much a new rule as a tweak on the old one. The AP's Doug Ferguson reported the wording for who makes the cut at a typical tour event has been changed from the "top 70 professionals and ties" to simply, the "top 70 and ties." In other words, amateurs in the field can now bump players on the cut line.As Ferguson points out, this minor difference would

When is it OK for a healthy player to withdraw from a tournament? It depends

By Max Adler Is thinking you’re going to play bad an acceptable reason for withdrawing from an athletic competition? Though Tiger Woods has ceased to be a role model in life, he’s still very much one in sport, and so the likely future Ryder Cup captain’s turnabout at the Safeway Open three days after signing up warrants this specific ethical scrutiny. If your son or daughter (or member-guest partner) decided on the eve of an event that he or she just weren’t feeling up to it—physically fine but

Spain's Rafael Cabrera Bello is the only player who was outside of that number who moved in, doing so by making it to the quarterfinals of the Match Play. The Official World

Tiger Woods Witnesses First Hole-In-One at Golf Course He Designed.

By John Holmes   When Tiger Woods isn't hitting 9-irons or giving advice to Jason Day, he's helping to break in the new golf course complex he designed at Bluejack National, a new community outside Houston, Texas.  Woods was there Wednesday, in fact, for the grand opening of The Playgrounds – a 10-hole loop of par-3 holes that range from 53 to 102 yards in length. A large crowd was on hand for the festivities, which included some kids getting to check out the facilities. One of those kids was

No Anchor - Not A Problem for Honda Winner Scott

By:  Doug Ferguson   PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Adam Scott won the Honda Classic and put to rest any notion that his career would suffer with a short putter.  In a tight duel with Sergio Garcia for the entire round Sunday at PGA National, Scott stayed out of the water and closed with an even-par 70 for a one-shot victory. It was his first title since Colonial in May 2014, and his first time winning with a conventional putter since the 2010 Singapore Open. The timing of his victory also was a

Justin Bieber Gives Bubba Watson's Son Caleb a Drumming Lesson

By:  John Holmes   Bubba Watson might be hearing a lot more from son Caleb if Justin Bieber's drum tips pay off. Bubba Watson is out in Los Angeles this week for the Northern Trust Open at Riviera, and he's taken some time to see some sights. Earlier this week, he dropped by the set of "2 Broke Girls" and met the cast of "Girl Meets World."   He also got Justin Bieber to show his young son Caleb around a drum set. How the Ping Anser Putter, One of the Most Iconic Clubs, Came To Be

By E. Michael Johnson   The most popular putter style of all time started with a drawing on a 78 r.p.m. record jacket.  That is the canvas Karsten Solheim, a Norwegian-born engineer who worked on jet fighters and missile guidance systems after World War II, used to sketch the Ping Anser putter in January 1966. A few weeks later, Solheim brought the club to the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open and piqued the interest of players such as George Archer, Kermit Zarley and Gene Littler—all who soon put it in

Golf Holds Strong in Heart of Oldest PGA Member

By Adam Schupak   They called Gus Andreone the Night Rider. The colorful nickname was bestowed upon him as a 15-year-old caddie at Pittsburgh’s St. Clair Country Club because of his willingness to loop for a member named Dr. Goldman in the day’s last, feeble light.  For years, the caddie yard was the academy from which underprivileged students graduated into the game. Andreone’s family was so poor that his shoes had holes in the soles. One time, to quicken the pace, he picked up the doctor’s

With Tiger Woods’ assault on 18 majors stalled and aura of inevitability over, Mt. Nicklaus has become both more majestic to behold and that much steeper to future climbers.
