Sam Snead's son keeps his father's memory alive by telling stories

Jack Snead is continuing -- and protecting -- a legacy. And what a legacy it is.The 71-year-old's father was Sam Snead, one of golf's biggest names, and the namesake of the Oak Grill & Tavern located at Lely Resort in Naples. That is one of several locations around the country, with the first opening in Hot Springs, Virginia. The Lely location opened in March 2012 after the original Naples restaurant -- just south of Tiburon Golf Club on Vanderbilt Beach Road -- had operated since December

A Golfer’s Night Before Christmas

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the greenNot a golfer was stirring, not even one seen. The golf gloves were hung by the chimney with care,In hopes that a tee time soon would be theirs.Little duffers were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of birdies danced in their heads. My friend in her visor, and I in my cap,Had just stored our clubs for a long winter’s nap. With the course frozen over and no one about,I was walking alone when I heard someone shout.Away down the tenth

You can win a $2.6 million mansion with a three-hole golf course for just $14. Yes, there's a catch

While rising house prices against the backdrop of stagnant salaries is becoming a genuine crisis across the globe, golfers have always battled exorbitant costs to play the game they love. But for prospective home-buying hackers, good news: the property of your dreams can be had for...well, less than a large bucket of range balls. Yes, there's a catch. A British man is selling off his $2.6 million mansion -- which comes with his Rolls Royce, pool, gym, fully-stocked wine cellar and a three-hole

Two Skills For Great Putting One for long putts, one inside five feet

Being a great putter doesn't mean you're rolling in bombs all day. Sure, that would be nice, but quality putting is about distance control from long range and precise aim on the short ones. From inside five feet, the biggest problem I see is a careless routine. It drives me crazy when golfers step up to a putt and plop their feet into place before thinking about where to aim the putter. Essentially, their feet have already dictated their aim. A better routine is to aim the putterface very

Before Ben Hogan became a legend, he had to break a nine-year winless streak as a pro

Ben Hogan is famously attributed with saying the secret to golf was "in the dirt." Ken Venturi also quoted Hogan as saying, "every day you miss practicing will take you one day longer to be good," which seems a mathematical improbability, but the point is Hogan was arguably the hardest-working player in golf history. Despite this, success took its sweet time, nine years to be exact after he turned pro in 1931.The milestone moment took place 75 years ago this week at the 1940 North and South Open

Greg Norman: All I Know About Winning in Golf, Business and Life

The trek to Greg Norman's getaway in northwest Colorado is a roundabout one. The retreat is tucked away in a remote, evergreen-covered corner of this rugged state, an area so isolated that GPS is little help. An unmarked dirt road runs from the highway to his front door, uncoiling like the rattlesnakes that lurk in the brush. Driving for some 30 minutes, you feel lost. Definitely lost. Then his Rocky Mountain Xanadu appears: a 14,000-square-foot "cabin," two miles of fly-fishing nirvana, and

Best Golf Story Ever

One of my favorite sports writers, Bill Simmons at ESPN.com, recently wrote a column that included a funny section on how everybody loves to tell a fantasy football war story, but no one wants to listen to them. It struck me that this is EXACTLY the same in golf. At the conclusion of every round, we sit together, each of us desperate to explain how the forces of nature and other golfers conspired together to rob us of a stroke (or three or four), pretending to listen to the others and hoping

Augusta National chairman Billy Payne is always the most interesting person in the room

[This story originally appeared in Sports Illustrated Golf+ in April 2016.]Some months ago my boss (or one of them) assigned me an interesting story for this issue: Jeff Knox, the amateur golfer and Augusta National member who often plays as a marker on Masters weekends. He has given interviews after some of his rounds, and my best guess was that if Knox wanted to do the story -- and if Billy Payne, the club's chairman since 2006, gave his approval -- it would happen.
